As HEX.xxx has begun to gather momentum and attention, questions about die gestalt of the website project and what we are reaching for have been answered in disjointed bits and pieces. Technically the project can be called public media, in fact we fit the actual meaning of the phrase far better than most news organizations, media outlets, and entertainment companies extant. The info on the main website (and other sites/forums) has grown organically over the last year and more, and on my short list of things to do has been to take a step back and consolidate the info on myself and the project into concise sections. My last post which was in part trying to answer “What is the Project” was originally an email to someone who had read my posts in the Deviations thread and was looking for more general info and to get involved, which left it both informative and confusing to newcomers. I will attempt to lay out some info about myself and the origins of the project as a start towards a better introduction document.

Personally I spend a lot of time reading, learning, discussing, consuming entertainment, and considering everything; with a heavy emphasis on reality, technology, psychology, culture, sexuality, history, space, medicine, the arts and sciences.

I am a geek, nerd, computer hacker who has been participating in, designing, setting up, and running various online communities since the Dark Ages of Dial-up BBSes before Windows and the Internet. I contract to national/worldwide enterprises for a year or two at a time to design, code, test, and implement migrations, roll-outs, and top tier support of Windows Servers, Custom Applications/Data, Physical to Virtual (VMWare), or Windows Clients and Applications. Among my many online community connections over the years I have been involved in the Open Source and Modding Community, organized/run a Player Town in Ultima Online and a ranked Raiding/Social Guild in World of Warcraft.

Expressing myself creatively has always been a large part of my life, through my occasional drawing or poem, hobby projects, and especially through my fiction and non-fiction writing. Over the decades as a “hired gun” hacker working in enterprise data centers on worldwide projects dealing with implementing and supporting both off the shelf and custom Operating Systems and Services/Applications I have been developing the concept of an online collaborative platform leveraging the worldwide reach of the Internet using wiki and open source methods. Focused on expanding and creating the background writing and art in three main categories and making use of Public Domain concepts and writing from H.P. Lovecraft as our fourth category, they form the core of the Obscure Delusion fiction in writing, art, music, animation, and live action formats.

Consolidation outlets such as Slashdot, Digg, io9, Reddit, and Cinema Blend discuss news, media, research; and sites like Lifehacker, TED Talks, Khan Academy, Indy Mogul, and MAKE produce videos and writing that is insightful, educational, and entertaining. Our goal is not to attempt to duplicate them, but to consume the collected content and provide insight, commentary, and original content back to the public from within our community. A growing number of artists, creators, and projects have shown that releasing low cost/kickstarter/free, Internet enabled collaborations, unrestricted by DRM, and even using Creative Commons or Public Domain licensing in addition to standard Copyright are all viable ways to create, fund, and distribute works. Among them are Kevin Smith, The Tunnel Movie, Pioneer One, Louis CK, Jonathan Coulton, Nine Inch Nails, Mike Patton, Radiohead, and many other well known or newcomer producers creating, exploring, and using these alternative channels, licensing, and methods.

In 2010 I began research, design, and prototype work on a website and collaborative structure based around the best software, concepts, and existing internet/cloud platforms in order to provide a permanent home to bring together discussion and commentary on these diverse topics and news as well as the ability to work together on creating new content, and began taking some of the scattered work I had done over the years on the Obscure Delusion fictional universe and bringing it into the platform. During the early stages I only had several close friends/collaborators involved from my social circle, including my lady love Poetesse and my hetero-life-mate Jacky Paper.

Obscure Delusion is a fictional universe firmly rooted in reality, even if perhaps a reality twisted into fantastical shapes and concepts. One aspect of entertainment that I have always found personally disturbing is the portrayal of certain aspects of the human condition. It covers a wide range of areas and interests, but the most egregious examples are areas of health/weight, psychology, and sexuality, which could be portrayed realistically and more compellingly than the “MPAA Approved Hollywood Treatment” given to many subjects. We are going to be making art which embraces reality, which not only entertains but doesn’t insult the audience with over simplification or misinformation. We would like to avoid the inclusion of material that would break the suspension of disbelief of someone familiar or expert in that area, which means making sure we are working not from “common knowledge” but from reality. Fiction that “we” want to watch and are proud to have a part in creating and sharing with the world.

Throughout 2011 I built a mockup of the site on a different domain, and once awarded the hex.xxx domain I initially kept the site very low key but added posts while continuing to work on designing and researching the back end computer systems. As part of the application process for a .xxx domain I had to go through an identity check with the International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR), make my personal and contact details available to the general public, and keep records which can be verified even though I am not creating explicit pornography. I have always been an open individual within my social group and those I have known in the BDSM life, however this was a move to complete honesty as everything I put online can now be directly tracked back to “me” in real life.

After an initial soft launch to garner interest in the local artist/acting community, our new visitors jumped from 500 a month to 1.5K a month. Then a post on Slashdot.org almost a month ago took us over 1K new visitors a day and has slowly backed down but still hasn’t reached a new equilibrium. I have been swamped ever since with both the planned, expected work and the happy problem of having to deal with public interest and having people from more professions and countries to recall wanting to get involved.

The media’s portrayal of the BDSM Community in general due to the Bob Bashara case, and the Deviations party hidden camera incident in particular have of course been on the Detroit area’s mind since each happened. One of the plans for the informational and educational aspects of the website is frank discussion of the research, science, medicine, myths, and societal conceptions of Human Sexuality: BDSM, Edge, and even Abnormal/”Broken”. We would like to involve and interview people both within and tangentially involved in the community, either openly or with their identities concealed, and without the use of suggestive questions to lead the interviewee or common media techniques used to edit for effect or content. We want to document the truth, not as just we as a community or a select group see it but as reality in all it’s scientific glory. Knowing the truth doesn’t detract from the wonder it enhances it, truth is endlessly entertaining and stranger than fiction, and when collected and spread openly and honestly betters the human race and the universe as a whole.
