We Are Doing It Wrong

Bold statement, I know, but after all the changes and upgrades around the website I have had a chance to start thinking about the workflow process. Having @Sockyification (and his kitty loving fiance) over last week to discuss both the project and workflow process helped immensely, as well as giving him the main video files for editing. Also trying to explain how her posts will flow through the system to @Poetesse always helps in finding problem areas, and she doesn’t mind playing lab rat. Doing things wrong is a great step toward doing things right, and while I had originally identified this as a major area that needed work I have been able to wait until I got the tools in place to change it.

Our core team has known each other for many years; for a time @paperjacky and I were neighbors while @Sockyification and a few others would be over all the time. We are used to coming together to hang out, watch a movie, play a video game, work on a project, etc. We do individual tasks on our own then come together in person for a short period of collaboration time before heading off to our next activity. All this while spending most of our time on family, work, bands, school, and whatever else we have going on.

Nothing really wrong about that, however since we are changing the projects we collaborate on to an online format we need to make sure we actually can do all aspects online. Part of this is addressed with the software changes that give a structure to the workflow, but the major part is going to be to shift many of our offline interactions online so we are not absolutely dependent on getting together in person to advance the project.

I’m going to take this one on as part of getting the entire workflow online as much as possible, and give the folks who are visiting an opportunity to read what is going on or even get involved in the process. I’ve also been so buried in work on the site that my own activities are really only interesting to other hackers. What I’ve been working on all weekend: complete reconfig of my machine so it’s full power can be used for working on the site and video while finally getting my movies, tv shows, and music on a dedicated system to serve the whole house. (my curse, I must constantly have something playing) It has been a nice change of pace and has given me some time to think about both this issue and the scenes I’m working on for one of our actresses.

So how do we do things right? I’m going to start moving my own stuff into the workflow process and start using the forums for more structured public interactions on the projects. There is still a divide between how the project workflow works internally and how we are going to use the forums, but such a separation is not necessarily a bad thing. So you may see some project fragments appear on the forum, and I’ll see what else I can get online for your perusal.

Some of it will still be behind the scenes, and some of it will only be available to site members so you might want to try our signup system now! It’s not perfect but it is opt-in, so check your email for the confirmation link and then your random password. Let’s see if I can lead by example and do things right!
