Unboxing the Vixia [Pics]

Sounds like a kinky euphemism for a sex act doesn’t it? I have definitely seen sex toys larger than this camcorder!

I did a couple of quick videos for comparison purposes, and the low light functionality is nothing short of amazing. It was picking up details and color levels that I couldn’t see with the naked eye. I’ll get them compressed and up as soon as I can, haven’t even installed the software yet.

The on cam functionality for playback is great, although several of the functions are quite useless they just take up space on the screen, especially the “decorations” app for putting funny image overlays up. Not exactly a professional feature.

I got a cheap tripod that had high ratings, and it was well worth the money. Take a look at this little Vixen perched way up there, with a bill for comparison.

I have no worries about it holding up my expensive little toy, and the legs are so wide at full extension that even my cats would have a hard time knocking it over.

While this is great for static shots, we also want to make sure we can get quality cam movement. After a bit of investigating I decided to grab an X-Grip and Camera Mounted Stereo Shotgun Mic.

The X-Grip not only smooths the movement much like a Steady-cam, but it allows for low angle shots from floor level. You can even use it for mounting the Mic, and while the Vixia has a built in stereo mic the external one I purchased allows even better quality.

Once the X-Grip and Shotgun Mic get delivered the poor cam is going to get lost in the accessories around it, although I am hoping to keep the weight down. This is so light currently I’m thinking of sticking with the included battery for now, especially since we aren’t planning on doing much outdoor work.

We will be giving it a workout later tonight when we shoot a new Socky video, lets just hope that he doesn’t trash the studio and crap in the fireplace… again.

Have to say I was extremely impressed with the boxing from both B & H Photo and Canon. The shipping box is strong cardboard with custom security packing tape with stop loss instructions printed right on it.

The Canon box was factory sealed as refurbished and came with brand new accessories and books, right down to the cables, battery, and stylus. Huge props for Canon on the quality of their refurbishment and the warranty they provide with it. I’m looking forward to playing with the Vixen!
