Time Traveler? You Decide.

@PunkRockStud posted this link and I thought I’d give it its own post.  I would love to hear what others think of this. My first thought is that she could be talking into a tape recorder or some sort….

  1. Unfortunately I am unable to move @PunkRockStud's comments over from the other post, so hopefully he will chime in here.

I recently read an article which mentions how these early film "heroes" did things in a much different way than today, and this may explain the "cell phone" in the picture. These actors did stunts in a completely different way, often with long continuous shots to show that there are no editing tricks used. Chaplain was of course a master of performing his own very complicated stunts, often with large groups needing to be choreographed and synchronized.

Conversely today's heroic actors never perform their own stunts due to insurance requirements and heavy use of editing. Jackie Chan is of course the exception that proves the rule, and that is only due to the extremely special circumstances of his career. He is the closest thing we have to a Chaplain living today.

My first thought is that it is a two way radio used by a "marked" actor for coordinating the shot with the directorial and choreography behind the scenes team. And I use "marked" in the sense of an actor hitting his mark since in large crowd scenes a group of actors will be gauging their movements and timing off of a key individual, often times the leads but sometimes a key background figure. Unfortunately even the bulky coat is not enough to hold a mobile two way radio of that day, which were only mobile in the sense that they could be driven to a site and setup as a stationary object about the size of a steamer trunk for just the radio, batteries not included.

So how does this help explain the "cell phone" here? While it could be another object, as I mentioned in my comment to the original the human race holds many things up to their head besides cell phones, I believe the simplest explanation is most likely the right one. There is no cell phone, whatever she is holding is perfectly normal for that era, and our minds are trying to find a pattern where there may be none. As a much clearer clip of the same movie shows, she may not have been talking OR holding anything at all. http://youtu.be/cObUgfoKdLg

  2. I saw another video with an an ad in it for what amounted to to be wireless communication from the same era just like we have in cell phones, but no satellites were involved of coarse. It advertised that one could call from the race tracks the to afford one's self the chance to gamble with friends or call one's lover to stay in contact with her or to call home from work (it said something like that). It mentioned in the article that you could wear it in your shirt pocket. Now, I don't doubt this technology had arrived at this point, though I doubt it took off as a popular item and failed. This was a very real item, article, and technology then… so it might explain the woman in the film. I have to hunt down the video now. No time traveler this time. I am sure. She doesn't even look the type.
