Moral Imperative

I see a lot of arguments on the interwebz at large about what constitutes health, and why we should all be pursuing it.  As members of human society, do we have a moral obligation to pursue individual health? If so, who gets to define health? Do we get to include mental health here, because that opens up a whole other can of worms……

To clarify,  the question isn’t really whether society is AFFECTED by the individual health of its members. Of course it is. But there are lots of things that affect society on an individual level, and we accept that said individuals do not actually have control over those things, and so they are not morally obligated to change, because they can’t. Who gets to say what healthy means? Do we get to say that ALL unhealthy people are immoral? If not, where do we draw the line? Who do we get to blame for their illnesses? And again, I ask, do we get to include mental illnesses?

To quote an interested party on another social network:  “That being said I don’t disagree with public health initiatives to reduce smoking or to encourage fitness. I just don’t think people should be shamed for their addictions.”

People also shouldn’t be shamed for what they look like, n’est-ce pas?  In general, I am not a fan of shame.  Why not rule through inspiration instead?  Every single inspirational figure of modern America takes place in one sort of culture of shame or another.  How do we get away from this?

  1. You have a moral imperative to pursue health if, when you get lung cancer or diabetes or serious self injury damage you are going to choose to pursue healthcare that you cannot pay for.

Laura, the main problem with that statement is that people who pursue healthcare they cannot pay for don't give a shit about what others think their moral imperative may be, although I do see your point. :-/
